More expert business advice from Google’s European Enterprise Director Roberto Solimene, as he explains how Google is repackaging its products for business:
“True to Google’s principle that everybody should have the same kind of products. We have created a range that actually goes from the very small organisation to the very large one. We have created after the search engine appliance the Google Mini which is a very similar appliance, like an index up to 50,000 documents. It is very suitable to companies with one or two or up to ten people. But then that grows up to 300,000 documents and then you can switch to the Google search appliance like an index up to 30 million documents. So you don’t need to be a really large organisation, you can be any sort of organisation that needs to find information quickly and effectively without spending too much in resources, products and software.
Google enterprise normally tends to use all of the products that could benefit a company. So we have enterprise if you want other Google products like Google Earth and Google Maps. So there is an enterprise version that businesses can take and use for their own benefit. So you can use Google Maps if you are a supermarket chain to locate all your stores for example.
You can use Google Maps if you are a real estate agent just to show with pictures and real data where that house or that apartment is. Or you can use Google Maps if you are a hotel chain just to show where they specific hotel is on the French Riviera and just zoom on it and give to the user the benefits of knowing before going that information.
Once again we are transforming complex data. Think about before five or ten years ago when using maps was something like science fiction stuff. So you know just physical and spatial information but now you know you just need your browser and your mouse just to go anywhere in the world.”
